Shabbat Tent @ Phish Festival

shabbat-tent-phish-fest

The team is gathering. The Challah and the Wine are on the horizon. As a thousand Jews descend on Indio, the Shabbat Tent Team wonders – who is out there who wants to help set up Shabbat at PF8? This will be a DIY Shabbat for the team – we are coming in as civilians.

SHABBAT TENT AT WAKARUSA, AK

Matisyahu

Calling all Jews going to WAKARUSA 2009: MATISYAHU will host a Shabbat Tent.

MATISYAHU performs on Friday late-afternoon at the festival, and will be joining festival-goers for Shabbat from Sundown on Friday night June 5 until nightfall on Saturday, June 6

Organized by the Shabbat Tent Team, and sponsored by Birthright Israel NEXT, Matisyahu and friends will be setting up prayer services, meals, and parties throughout the weekend.

No knowledge of Shabbat is required, and all activities are open to everyone who wants to attend.

Campers are also free to stop by the Shabbat Tent at anytime throughout the festival simply to hang out, fire up a conversation, or mingle with new friends and old. More details on the Shabbat festivities will be forthcoming soon and available here and at Matisyahu’s official website.

Birthright NEXT Sponsors Shabbat Tent

Matisyahu Shabbat Tent at Langerado 2008

From our humble beginnings with two sticks and a piece of matzah, Shabbat Tent has grown up. We once ground our own flour for challah, and rubbed sticks together for fire. We fished for gefilte fish with homemade rods. We harvested our own soybeans for tofu. It was really old-school.

Ok, not really, but we had nothing when we started.

Thanks to generous sponsorship and the involvement of Birthright NEXT, Shabbat Tent this year at WAKARUSA will be fully operational, staffed, equipped, and ready.

Make sure to follow us on TWITTER, check back for more posts and buy your tickets.

History of Shabbat Tent

Phish

Phish

The Shabbat Tent Team started unofficially during the hours connecting 1999 and 2000. The rock band Phish was celebrating the coming of a new millennium at the Big Cyprus Indian Reservation in South Florida by playing for more than 12 hours over the span of two days. A small team consisting of Adam Weinberg, Joshua Vogelstein, and Rav Shmuel set up a small camping area to provide concert goers Shabbat services (including an amazing Kabbalat service sung while fireworks and disco-parties blared from nearby camp sites) Kiddush, Challah, and lively all-night discussions.  Jews from all walks of life attended the services and engaged each other in issues of Judaism, music, spirituality, and social responsibility.  There was little promotion, no funding, and lots of turn out – the seeds for providing Shabbat at mega-festivals were planted.During the next few summers, the team replicated the Shabbat Tent resource at more than a dozen Phish concerts and summer music festivals. However, without the direct assistance from camping directors, festival promoters, and funding, the Shabbat Tent functioned on a small scale reaching only a small percentage of attending Jews.

Matisyahu

Matisyahu

The major change in the operation of the Shabbat Tent Team occurred the weekend of March 9-11, 2007.  Famed reggae singer Matisyahu contacted team member Adam Weinberg to organize a large scale Shabbat Tent at the South Florida music and camping festival Langerado.  With the support of a headlining artist, the team was able to work closely with the festival camping director and promoters in setting up a 1600 sqft space in the middle of the campgrounds ready to cater to everyone and anyone’s Shabbat and spiritual needs.  The Shabbat Tent fed more than 300 people throughout the weekend, ran services catering to any Jew who chose to show up, and provided a comfortable and open space for hundreds more to relax, form social networks with other festival-goers, and share in a taste of Shabbat among the noise of a large music festival. The members of the team rotate from festival to festival, but the simple goal is to provide as many concert-goers with the ritual, peace, and inspiration Shabbat has to offer with services, meals, parties, and lively classes on spirituality, Judaism, and social responsibility, the Team is bringing the uniquely Jewish day-of-rest to campers festival-wide.

Matisyahu Shabbat Tent @ Langerado brought the roof down, literally

Matisyahu, world reggae superstar, was one of the headline performers at this year’s Langerado Music Festival. In order to observe Shabbat – and perform Saturday night — Matisyahu arranged for Shabbat to be held at the festival itself!

Thanks to support from sponsors birthright israel Next, the Shabbat program brought together Matisyahu and his wife Tahli, Rabbi Leibish and Dena Hundert of Montreal, Rabbi Yonah, and other staff for a rocking Shabbat program. All the logistics and food and staffing were arranged by Adam Weinberg, who worked tirelessly to make this program a reality.

200 or more people jammed the tent and overflowed into “Main Street” during Kabbalat Shabbat. The dancing was amazing and lasted for over an hour. When the dust settled we transformed the tent into a Shabbat Table, and hundreds ate a delicious Shabbat dinner before heading out to hear their favorite bands.

Check out this video from Florida’s Langerao Music Festival Shabbat Tent – notice tent on the ground. It blew down in hurricane force winds. No one was hurt and the show went on.
